College girls from Notre Dame go on an “artificial intelligence” excursion
Eighth grade girls received hands-on experience learning about emerging technologies
CLASSROOM. >> IF I CODE A CODE, WHAT SHOULD MY CODE LOOK LOOK LIKE? MALLORY A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN: MSOE AND NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL GIVES A WHOLE NEW MEANING TO ‘LEARNING BY DOING’ >> A GROUP LEARNS MACHINE LEARNING AND NEURO NETWORKS, USING THIS TO PROGRAM ROBOTIC HANDS, WHICH CAN ARTICULATE IN USE OF DIFFERENT CODE THEY LEARN. >> YOU CAN PUT THESE TWO DOWN. MALLORY: 40 8TH GIRLS FROM NOTRE DAME MIDDLE SCHOOL ATTENDED CLASSES ON EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, WITH PARTICULAR FOCUS ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. >> IT WAS COOL BECAUSE IT’S NOT SOMETHING WE USUALLY DO IN REGULAR CLASSES, AND IT WAS INTERESTING TO SEE IT HAPPEN. MALLORY ONE OF TODAY’S LESSONS: WAS ABOUT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ART, WHICH IS TIMELY AS MORE AI IS APPEARING ON PLACES LIKE INSTAGRAM AND TIKTOK. >> FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE STUDENTS IN GENERAL DON’T GET MUCH EXPOSURE TO UNDERSTAND HOW AI IS A PART OF THEIR LIVES WHETHER IT’S NETFLIX, TIKTOK, INSTAGRAM SO JUST KNOW HOW AI ALREADY PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN THEIR LIFE IS REALLY IMPORTANT. MALLORY: ACCORDING TO THE PEW RESEARCH CENTER, WOMEN MAKE UP LESS THAN A QUARTER OF STEM JOBS. THOSE BEHIND THE PROGRAM SAY THEY HOPE THE LESSONS LEARNED TUESDAY OPENED STUDENTS’ EYES TO FUTURE POSSIBILITIES. >> IT’S GREAT TO SEE THE GIRLS BUILDING THEIR CONFIDENCE IN THIS AREA AND TO SEE THAT THEY CAN DO THIS JOB. COLLEGE IS A CRITICAL AGE, ESPECIALLY FOR COLLEGE GIRLS IN STEM. AND TO ENSURE THEY SEE A PATHWAY IN STEM, AND CAN SEE THEMSELVES IN THESE KINDS OF CAREERS. MALLORY LA REPORT: MILWAUKEE SCHOOL O

A special partnership is giving young girls in Milwaukee the chance to learn about artificial intelligence and STEM. On Tuesday, the Milwaukee School of Engineering partnered with Northwestern Mutual for “Girls + AI,” an MKE Hour of Tech event. Forty eighth-grade girls from Notre Dame Middle School received hands-on experience learning about emerging technologies. During the event, students programmed robotic hands to follow commands, attended lectures on data literacy, and even had the opportunity to network and gain new mentors. At the end of the day, the students were able to play Rock, Paper, Scissors using the robotic hands they had programmed. Tuesday’s event is one of many collaborations between MSOE and Northwestern Mutual where they are working to introduce K-12 students to the world of STEM.
