We first met Emily Vasquez and her daughter Luisita last year. Luisita, who was 8 at the time, sold her toys and used the money to buy school supplies for students in need.
They also helped the homeless.

“We started a homeless group where we picked up blankets,” Vasquez said. “We washed and folded it and brought it to the park people and sandwiches.”
Vasquez said things turned around.
“We found ourselves in a bad situation,” Vasquez said. “It was too much for me, too much for her, so we really had to leave the house.”
Vasquez said at one point they were homeless and had to live in a hotel for two months until someone helped them find housing.
“Luisita was so brave because all this time we lost everything, she was fine,” Vasquez said. “She was like mom, remember they’re just material, they’re just objects.”
